Come siamo potuti diventare così fragili? Credevamo di essere la generazione più fortunata della storia. Commerciare o viaggiare ovunque nel mondo sembrava un nostro diritto. Invece per la seconda volta in un decennio miliardi di donne e uomini – italiani inclusi – si trovano intrappolati in una catastrofe.

Possiamo dirci che dietro c’è la «mala sorte», o seguire il filo che corre attraverso gli ultimi vent’anni. L’11 settembre causato da un gruppo di fanatici che avevano potuto addestrarsi al volo negli Stati Uniti. Il 2008 innescato da banchieri di Wall Street che avevano smarrito il senso della realtà. Infine una cerchia ristretta di funzionari cinesi alle prese con un virus misterioso. La rete del mondo globalizzato del ventunesimo secolo è così in tensione che ogni urto propaga onde di choc ovunque con la velocità di un volo intercontinentale o di un clic. Un sistema che aveva preso forma in nome dell’efficienza si rivela vulnerabile. Ciò che era nato in nome delle libertà genera squilibri nei quali la democrazia arretra. Il cambiamento viaggia sempre un passo avanti a noi. Eppure chi vede i pericoli in anticipo di solito viene ignorato ed è forse proprio qui, nelle nostre teste, che è nascosta la trappola: non siamo capaci di immaginare gli scarti improvvisi. Oggi dovremmo chiederci se il prossimo rischio verrà da un disastro ambientale o da un attacco terroristico al cloud. Di sicuro questa globalizzazione ha bisogno di sviluppare anticorpi che ci proteggano. E può farlo, se accettiamo una società meno diseguale.
